Belvidere council discusses abandoned property maintenance; mowing | Belvidere Daily Republican

Written by Margaret Rock Both

Often, the properties with long grass during the summer are those whose owners have abandoned them or are bank-owned. The city will try to squeeze in mowing of the lawns and track the costs. In this way, they can place a lien on the property to recapture the mowing expense. The lien is settled when and if the property is sold.

Because of the number of these properties and weather favorable to growing grass, the public works department is having a challenge keeping pace. And, because of recent budget cuts and tight revenue, the city’s police department stepped up to help manage the problem.

Good Samaritans help Poplar Grove family with big water bill | Belvidere Daily Republican

Read the entire article—there was plenty of fireworks before the Good Samaritan came forward.

Written by Bob Balgemann

They had been overwhelmed by a $5,087 water bill, including penalties, and were looking for some way to dig themselves out of that hole.

Enter a man from Northbrook, who heard about the family’s plight over the radio.

He attended the June 10 Poplar Grove Village Board meeting and agreed to pay $3,500 toward the bill. The balance came out of a $2,000 pay pal account set up to help the family.

Bruce Rauner is an American businessman who is the chairman of R8 Capital Partners, and former chairman of the private equity firm GTCR, based in Chicago. He is currently a Republican candidate for the governor of Illinois.

Education[edit]

Rauner graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in economics from Dartmouth College. He later received an MBA from Harvard University.[1]

Business career[edit]

Rauner was the Chairman of private equity firm GTCR, where he had worked for more than 30 years, until he retired in October 2012.[2] A number of state pension funds, including those of Illinois, have invested in GTCR, whose funds have regularly outperformed other private equity investment funds as well as the stock market.[3]

After leaving GTCR, Rauner opened an office for a self-financed venture firm, R8 Capital Partners. The firm will invest up to $15 million in smaller Illinois companies.[4] Rauner is the current Chairman of the Education Committee of the Civic Committee of The Commercial Club of Chicago, Co-Chairman of the Chicago-China Initiative, and Chairman of ACT Charter School. He also served as Chairman of Choose Chicago, the not-for-profit that serves as the city's convention and tourism bureau,[5] resigning in May 2013,[6] and as Chairman of the Chicago Public Education Fund.[7]

Politics[edit]

In March 2013, Rauner formed an exploratory committee to look at a run for Governor of Illinois as a Republican.[8] Rauner said his top priorities included streamlining government, improving education, and improving the state's business climate.[9]He also supports term limits and says he would serve no more than 8 years as governor.[9]

In March 2013, the Daily Herald reported that Rauner had, for a number of years, improperly claimed three homestead exemptions on his Cook County property taxes.[10] In April 2013, Crain's Chicago Business reported that Rauner, who had changed his voter registration address from Wilmette to Chicago in 2008, allegedly used his influence to obtain admission to Walter Payton College Prep for a daughter who did not meet the entrance requirements of the school and was initially denied admission.[11]

In early June of 2013, Rauner officially announced his candidacy for governor.[12] Rauner has served as an advisor to Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel. [13]

Philanthropy[edit]

Rauner was named the 2008 Philanthropist of the Year by the Chicago Association of Fundraising Professionals.[14] In 2003 Rauner received the Daley Medal from the Illinois Venture Capital Association for extraordinary support to the Illinois economy[15] and was given the Association for Corporate Growth’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Rauner and his wife received the Golden Apple Foundation’s 2011 Community Service Award.[16]

Rauner has been a financial supporter of projects including Chicago’s Red Cross regional headquarters, the YMCA in the Little Village neighborhood,[17] six new charter high schools,[18] an AUSL turnaround campus, scholarship programs for disadvantaged Illinois public school students, and achievement-based compensation systems for teachers and principals in Chicago Public Schools. He provided major funding for the construction of the Rauner Special Collections Library at Dartmouth College,[19] endowed full professor chairs at Dartmouth College, Morehouse College, University of Chicago and Harvard Business School, and was the lead donor for the Stanley C. Golder Center for Private Equity and Entrepreneurial Finance at the University of Illinois.[20]

Rauner serves on the board of the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.[21]

Personal[edit]

Rauner lives in Winnetka, Illinois with his wife, Dr. Diana Mendley Rauner, and family.[22]

GTCR and Bruce Rauner in spotlight again with Rauner's run for Illinois governor - Chicago Tribune

Rauner, a Republican, and his former firm, Chicago-based GTCR, aren't as well-known nationally as Romney and Bain, but they can expect to be scrutinized, especially if Rauner's candidacy gains momentum.

Founded in 1980, what's now GTCR — the R stands for Rauner — has invested $10 billion in more than 200 companies. Rauner, who joined the firm in 1981 and whose name was added to the door in 1987, retired in October to become more active in politics.

Here are are some of GTCR companies not all of them are success stories:

HSM Electronic Protection Services

Actient Pharmaceuticals

ATI Physical Therapy

DB Aviation

ForeFront Education

InteCap

Invenergy

Lighthouse Global Net

LiquidPoint

Morton Grove Pharmaceuticals

Ovation Pharmaceuticals

PrivateBancorp

Wilton Industries

Letters: Bruce Rauner, Illinois’ Mitt Romney? - Joliet Herald News

No one should be surprised that Bruce Rauner has set foot in the Illinois governor’s race by trampling all over the state’s working families. As a billionaire venture capitalist in the same line of business as Mitt Romney, the Ivy League-educated Rauner will never be confused for a man of the people — unless the people in question are corporate moguls.

Despite his efforts to portray himself as a regular guy who can fire a rifle, Rauner indicated that, as governor, he would take target practice on average working families. He took a special pot shot at our union, which represents low-wage health care and child care workers throughout Illinois. It was a glaring illustration of how little Rauner understands the plight of the state’s working class.

St. James Church plans draw public comment | Belvidere Daily Republican

Written by Margaret Rock

Residents came to express  concern over St. James’ church plans to expand their space. One person complained the council wasn’t paying enough attention to the plans, especially those relating to setbacks, adding a steeple, and parking.

“I think this whole thing needs more scrutiny,” warned one resident.

Others provided differing perspectives from the neighborhood, saying they may not be against the church expanding, but doing it by asking for a exception was bothersome.

Chrysler CEO, LaHood held secret meeting to avert Jeep fight | The Detroit News

imagesecret meeting June 9 between Chrysler Group LLC CEO Sergio Marchionne and Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood at a Chicago airport helped avert a major clash between the Auburn Hills automaker and federal auto safety regulators over 2.7 million Jeep SUVs that regulators said posed a fire risk….

met at the Federal Aviation Administration office at O’Hare International Airport. LaHood drove up from his home in Peoria, Ill., while Marchionne flew in from Italy and Strickland took a flight from Washington. After a tough, hour-long “frank” meeting, the sides agreed to try to settle the matter, and Marchionne sent a team of engineers to Washington the next day to work with NHTSA on the outlines of a fix.

“Once he (Marchionne) met with David and I in Chicago, he knew this had to get done,” LaHood said. “(Marchionne) didn’t realize how serious this was, how serious we were, and the thing was resolved satisfactorily. .... We pretty much reached an agreement there.”

Letter: Ralph McKenna memorial fund will go to music camp - Rockford, IL - Rockford Register Star

It behooves me to share my past experience with others who are interested in this situation.

My husband, Ralph, taught and coached in Belvidere District 100 for many years. We took an active interest in our community and the school system and raised two children here.

Ralph passed away in 2011, and it seemed appropriate to have his memorial go to football players who were going to pursue a career in that area. It involved $4,000.

After the forms were completed two years in a row, I still hadn't heard anything regarding this. In April, I called the main office and was told they hadn't received the forms, that is was too late for this year and that I should fill out them again next year. I refused... two times and out!

For you kind people who generously donated to Ralph's memorial, you are owed an explanation. Ralph loved music, and he loved dance, which surprised some of his students. Therefore, the memorial money will be going to Birch Creek Music Camp in Egg Harbor, Wis. We always made a point of going up to enjoy the outstanding high school musicians during the big band and jazz sessions. There will be a bench with his name on it, and the balance will go to the camps other needs.

After living in Belvidere since the early 1960s and taking pride in our city and schools, I find it difficult to find words to explain my attitude now.

Ever since the idea to build another high school came up and was acted upon, it has affected the schools and the city. What a shame! There were other alternatives much less costly and less disruptive to the community. Now we're left with a big bill and the need to make drastic cuts, which affects everyone.

This story tells me you are losing good dedicated employees because they don't like what the future looks like or maybe they don't agree with what's going on.

From my perspective, I see an inept administration who we are paying to manage the district in an incompetent manner. Where are we going for here? These are the leaders of tomorrow that you're playing with. These decisions matter and make a big difference in children's lives.

Good luck to our students and the people who care.

Historical museum addition moving along according to schedule | Belvidere Daily Republican

Written by Bob Balgemann

To finance the addition the district took out a $950,000 loan, with some $500,000 in donations helping defray the overall cost of $1.4 million.

Museum officials are hoping to resume the popular series of quarterly programs later in the year. The programs included everything from a detailed presentation on the Lincoln funeral train to a portrayal of Ulysses S. Grant.

The museum opened in 1968. In 2003, the district bought some buildings along Pleasant Street and tore them down, to create open space directly north of the museum. Then, in 2007, the district purchased a bank building next door for use as a research center.

Summer homeless count may not happen in Boone County | Belvidere Daily Republican

Written by Bob Balgemann

From now on, the Service Providers Group will be in charge of the count, which compares numbers with those found during the survey last winter. From those counts comes HUD and state money that is spent in Winnebago and Boone counties to benefit the homeless.

Danice Loveridge, chairperson of the Boone County task force, said some gaps had been identified as existing in the northern part of the county.

One of them is the lack of transportation to get the homeless from the smaller villages to Belvidere. “We’re just identifying that” situation, she said. “We don’t have a solution.”

Chrysler refuses NHTSA demand for 2.7 million Jeep SUV recall - Jun. 4, 2013

Chrysler says that the design of the gas tank cited by NHTSA -- placed behind the rear axle -- is a commonly accepted design used in many other vehicles. It also says that the fatal accidents that occurred involving the vehicles were almost all high-speed, high-energy accidents in which a different design would have made no difference.
