Clout St: No shortage of mayor candidates expected

Now every politician who has dreamed of replacing Daley will get their chance in next February's city elections.

Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart, who has raised his profile in recent years by going after Craigslist prostitution advertisements and overseeing the cleanup of Burr Oak Cemetery after uncovering a grave-reselling scheme, is one potential candidate.

Assessor James Houlihan, also has been mentioned as possibility. Houlihan is not seeking re-election but long has talked about running for higher office.

Among aldermen discussed as potential mayoral candidates are Robert Fioretti, 2nd; Sandi Jackson, 7th; Thomas Allen, 38th; Scott Waguespack, 32nd; Brendan Reilly, 42nd; and Thomas Tunney, 44th.

Earlier this year, White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel voiced his mayoral ambitions

Ald. Edward Burke, 14th, chairman of the powerful City Council Finance Committee and the council's longest-serving member, would not rule out now running for mayor himself.

“Being joint employees, they would only be affected if the County Board were asked to approve the same thing,” Boone County Administrator Ken Terrinoni said. “If the city intended that to affect the positions we jointly fund, then they would have to ask the County Board to do likewise.”

cuts proposed by the mayor are needed to help the city avoid dropping its general fund balance to less than $600,000, or just three weeks of reserves. Still, it will only reduce the $1.1 million shortfall in the budget by $250,000.

Don Larson:  Like to hear the reasons why the city/county employees can't drive their own cars to work....including the police. I sure wish I got a free tank of gas every week..and a free car to drive..with free insurance...this will save the gas that's wasted and the depreciation on the vehicle, and it will last longer if ONLY used for work..like it should be
