Residents stop proposed Cherry Valley tax - Rockford, IL - Rockford Register Star

Back-door referendum stopped in Cherry Valley. 

The village said today the group collected the necessary number of signatures from residential and commercial properties within a special taxing district to stop the project and its tax levy from going forward

The village will continue to pursue alternate ways to fund the project, officials said in a news release.

GOP leader: Unemployment extension to pass - Chicago Breaking Business

a filibuster on the Senate floor is blocking legislation that would extend payments for 30 days. 

Sen. Jon Kyl of Arizona says the extension will pass, but only because it's temporary. The benefits are part of a larger package of government programs that expired Sunday because senators couldn't agree on how to pay to keep them going.
