Postmaster delivers bundle of bad news - washingtonpost.com

United States Postal ServicePostal Service experienced a 13 percent drop in mail volume last fiscal year, more than double any previous decline, and lost $3.8 billion. The projections anticipate steeper drops in mail volume and revenue over the next 10 years. For the first time, the agency is acknowledging that it seems unlikely mail volume will ever return to pre-recession levels.

end to Saturday mail deliveries, longer delivery times for letters and packages, increases in postage-stamp prices that exceed the rate of inflation, and -- possibly -- future layoffs.

wants Congress to reverse a 2006 law requiring the Postal Service to prepay its retiree health benefits, to the tune of $5 billion per year. No other federal agency or Fortune 500 company makes such payments, Potter said.

Amtrak rail service on its way to Freeport - Freeport, IL - The Journal-Standard

Currently, the project’s largest hurdle is whether cities can reach an agreement on the precise route the service would take. The bulk of the discussion concerns construction east of Freeport. City officials and business leaders are determining whether the route should run through Belvidere or Genoa prior to reaching Freeport.

“The biggest thing is to get consensus on the route,” Griswold said. “Once the rail goes west of Rockford, there is really only one route.”

The city[of Freeport] plans to allocate Tax Increment Financing (TIF) dollars to build a platform at Tutty’s Crossing. Gaulrapp said construction on the platform would likely begin in late 2010 or early 2011
