NYT defends publishing leaked military records

 

Several weeks ago, WikiLeaks provided the documents to three publications—The New York Times, London’s The Guardian, and Germany’s Der Spiegel—under an agreement that the newspapers couldn't publish the material until Sunday.

The Times described the archive as offering “an unvarnished, ground-level picture” of the war “that is in many respects more grim than the official portrayal.” The Guardian said the documents present "a devastating portrait of the failing war in Afghanistan,” while Der Spiegel noted the “gloomy picture” on the ground.
