Township questions
BELVIDERE – Longtime Belvidere Township resident Cathy Ward is continuing to question the township’s refusal to provide any financial assistance for the Belvidere Boone County Food Pantry.
She isn’t satisfied with township officials, including their attorney, saying it isn’t allowed to providing funding for the pantry because it is located outside the township. Especially after that attorney, Keri-Lyn Krafthefer, said Palatine Township formed an internal organization, overseen by the board of trustees, for that purpose.
Ward has received all of the information she requested on the general assistance fund and other internal spending to help those in need. More recently, she requested copies of the bills that were approved during the board’s Feb. 14 meeting.
Later, she questioned the township board spending $2,000 to have its attorney address why it could not give money to the food pantry. Ward also questioned the township spending $200 to have a statement by Supervisor Pat Murphy published in the Boone County Shopper, explaining the township’s position on the food pantry issue.
Questions will continue to be asked, she said, adding that the food pantry matter “isn’t going away.”
Murphy said after Tuesday’s township meeting those steps would not have been necessary “if Cathy Ward had listened to us or taken the time to come in and talk to us. We had to refute what she said, which was inaccurate.”
Trustee Paul Zeien said the long-term effect of the questioning will be the board consulting an attorney “when we have issues like this one.”
