Chicago and other parts of the nation report a bump in COVID-19 cases
The U.S. is seeing an increase in COVID-19 cases for the first time since the end of the public health emergency in May, The Washington Post reports.
Health officials say the late summer bump highlights challenges of avoiding the virus without widely available free testing.
“We are going to continue to see people hospitalized for COVID for illnesses that could have been prevented had testing been freely and widely available,” said William Schaffner, a medical professor who specializes in infectious diseases at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. [Washington Post]
The Chicago area saw an average of about 100 new hospitalizations each week last month, according to federal data.
That’s relatively low compared to previous upticks, and local health officials say it’s too early to sound any alarms. [WTTW News]
