DuPage County: Transparency In Government

In Boone County, not even county board members can see the individual expenditures of all county funds.  In DuPage county every citizen can see them on the internet. The reports contain information about expenditures subject to DuPage County Board budgetary appropriation.

Do you think we have a problem here in Boone County?

County Auditor Bob Grogan is pledged to provide the citizens and taxpayers of DuPage County with timely and pertinent information regarding the operations of DuPage County Government. To that end, the Auditor has made the individual expenditures of County funds available for public viewing. The data is available for the current fiscal year through the end of last month, as well as several prior fiscal years.

My experience is that posting expenditures is not technically difficult. For us it did not require new software, consultants or additional staffing. I have worked with numerous accounting systems and have yet to find one that cannot do this at least on a rudimentary scale. We believe that in addition to just providing the public a better service by posting this information in DuPage we have also been able to reduce the amount of time we spend on FOIAs.
