Empty Tables Threaten Some Restaurant Chains - NYTimes.com
1990, the number of restaurants and bars has grown to 537,000 from 361,000, a 49 percent increase, according to the National Restaurant Association. Population in the United States grew 23 percent in that period.
Many are going into survival mode, trying to renegotiate their loans, cutting staff, offering bargains to customers and closing less profitable restaurants.

AT&T and Union Talks Continue Past Deadline - NYTimes.com
The union said several of its districts have filed charges with the National Labor Relations Board, accusing AT&T of refusing to provide information on the cost of benefits and other issues necessary to resolve outstanding issues.
The units include a national group and workers in the Northeast, Midwest, Southwest and West. The talks were taking place in New Haven, Conn.; Oakton, Va.; the Chicago area; Austin, Texas; and San Francisco.

The starting annual salary after academy training is $33,700. After about five years, it can reach $95,000. Must be under age thirty to apply.
Training to be an air traffic controller can take years. Applicants must be under 30 and have either a minimum of a high school diploma and three years of full-time work experience or four years of college. (Some combination of the three can be acceptable as well.)
About 70 percent of applicants have come from the military’s air traffic control system or have completed the F.A.A. Air Traffic Collegiate Training Initiative Program, offered nationwide at 13 colleges and universities

House rejects bill to repeal horse slaughtering ban | Daily Chronicle
Since the DeKalb plant closed its doors, there’s been a rise in the number of complaints regarding horse abuse and neglect reported to the Illinois Department of Agriculture. There were 461 complaints in 2006. In 2007, the year the plant closed, that number jumped to 681. In 2008, 730 complaints were reported.
Close vote indicates that “horse meat for export issue” may still be alive in Illinois.

Local Government Watch: Wisconsin
Apparently in Wisconsin officials, are subject to a fine for non-compliance with the notification requirement of the Open Meetings Act.
Town leaders met in closed session at 6 p.m. on March 17th without posting notice 24 hours in advance as required by Wisconsin state statute and without notifying media outlets.
Hauser, Kitzmann, Booth and Schaller could face fines of $25 to $300 each, and any action taken in the closed session could be invalidated if investigators conclude they violated open meeting laws, Gruenke said.
