State of Arizona reacts to claim of air filtration system stemming COVID 19

Attorney general sends cease and desist letter to church that hosted Trump for COVID-19 claims

Dream City Church in Phoenix on June 22, 2020, the day before the Students for Trump event where President Donald Trump will speak at Dream City Church.

Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich sent a cease and desist letter to Glendale-based Clean Air EXP and Dream City Church for their claims suggesting an air purification system neutralizes COVID-19.

The Attorney General's Office alleges that Clean Air EXP continues to advertise that its air filtration products neutralize 99.9% of viruses that are "COVID-19 surrogates," according to a Friday morning press release.

Previous representations on the company's website suggested that its filtration systems would "neutralize 99.9% of 'coronavirus,' when in fact this was based on testing of coronavirus 229E, a virus which causes the common cold," the press release said.

The attorney general wrote that the statements imply the company's products can prevent COVID-19 transmission and infection, but that the office is "aware of no scientific research or public health authority certifying any kind of air treatment product as a means of preventing COVID-19 infections."

“Businesses cannot mislead consumers with their advertising, especially when it comes to health issues as serious as COVID-19,” Brnovich wrote. “We will not tolerate companies or individuals attempting to deceive or exploit the public during this public health crisis.”

A similar warning was sent to Dream City Church regarding the "public representations" it made about the air filtration system it had purchased from Clean Air EXP, particularly the claim that the system "kills 99% of COVID within 10 minutes."

The church also claimed "when you come into (the church's) auditorium, 99% of COVID is gone" and that "...when you come down here, you'll be safe and protected."

The claims were made in the days leading up to a rally at the church by President Donald Trump, which was attended largely by people not wearing masks despite city and county requirements to do so.

The press release said the church was placed "on notice" that misrepresentations and false promises related to the safety of its facilities may violate the Arizona Consumer Fraud Act.

In a written statement sent Friday afternoon to The Arizona Republic, Clean Air EXP said it was "committed to developing and providing advanced air and surface purification systems for homes and businesses."

"No air purification system, including ours, can universally prevent coronavirus (including COVID-19) infections," the statement read.

It went on to say that the company updated its website on June 23 to "further emphasize the coronavirus surrogates" used in its testing and made its lab reports available.

"We encourage following hygiene guidelines in the manner ordered or suggested by government authorities," the company said.

Dream City Church  did not immediately return The Republic's request for comment.

Winnebago County

WINNEBAGO COUNTY (WREX) — Winnebago County hit a positive milestone on Monday surrounding the coronavirus crisis; it's the longest stretch with no COVID-19 deaths the county has seen.

So far, a total of 85 people have died from the virus in Winnebago County.

However, the death toll has not changed in 7 days, or the longest stretch since the county saw its first fatality back in March.

On Monday, Winnebago County Health Department Director Dr. Sandra Martell said she's cautiously optimistic about the numbers, but is hopeful the death rate will stay down.

Also during a news briefing, Dr. Martell stressed the importance of businesses following the strict reopening guidelines during the pandemic as the county prepares to move into Phase 4 of reopening.

She said any business not following the rules will be called out publicly.

"Winnebago County Health Department moving forward will post the names of establishments when there are more validated complaints and any establishment that has been issued an order of closure on our website
we want the community to know those facilities and establishments that have not been compliance so consumers can make that choice" said Dr. Martell.

County health officials say the number one complaint it receives on the COVID-19 hotline is about businesses not enforcing masks and social distancing requirements.

Winnebago County surpassed 2,900 total cases of COVID-19 on Monday after the health department reported 19 new cases, bringing its total number of cases up to 2,903 since the pandemic began. The county sits at 85 deaths and a 94 percent recovery rate.

CDC is responding to an outbreak of respiratory illness caused by a novel (new) coronavirus. The outbreak first started in Wuhan, China, but cases have been identified in a growing number of other locations internationally, including the United States. In addition to CDC, many public health laboratories are now testing for the virus that causes COVID-19.

  • Jurisdictions reporting cases: 55 (50 states, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, Northern Marianas, and US Virgin Islands)

* Data include both confirmed and presumptive positive cases of COVID-19 reported to CDC or tested at CDC since January 21, 2020, with the exception of testing results for persons repatriated to the United States from Wuhan, China and Japan. State and local public health departments are now testing and publicly reporting their cases. In the event of a discrepancy between CDC cases and cases reported by state and local public health officials, data reported by states should be considered the most up to date.

† Numbers updated Saturday and Sunday are not confirmed by state and territorial health departments. These numbers will be modified when numbers are updated on Monday.(

State and local public health departments are now testing and publicly reporting their cases. † CDC is no longer reporting the number of persons under investigation (PUIs) that have been tested, as well as PUIs that have tested negative. Now that states are testing and reporting their own results, CDC’s numbers are not representative of all testing being done nationwide.
