The Florida Department of Health announced 10,059 new cases of COVID-19 in the state on Sunday, July 5. Florida now has 200,111 coronavirus cases across the state. The number of reported deaths of Florida residents increased by 29 to 3,731.

Sarasota County’s numbers jumped by 101 cases since Saturday — the fifth day in a row that new cases have been over 100. Manatee County had 162 new cases, for a total of 3,716. Both counties set new records on July 4 for number of new cases in a single day.

One of the reasons for those spikes is a surge in testing. Both Sarasota and Manatee counties had a positive test rate Sunday of 12% percent. There were no new deaths reported in Manatee or Sarasota counties on Saturday.

Statewide, 15,895 people have been hospitalized during the pandemic, or 8% of all cases. In Sarasota County, 222 people, or 10%, have been hospitalized. In Manatee County, 284 people, 8%, have been hospitalized.

The number of COVID-19 patients at Sarasota Memorial Hospital keeps climbing to new records. The hospital had a record 61 COVID-19 patients Friday, up from 56 patients on Thursday and 50 on Tuesday.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin health officials reported the most coronavirus cases in a single day on Saturday, tallying 738 people with the virus.

As the nation prepared to celebrate Independence Day, Gov. Tony Evers urged people to cancel festivities and stay home, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.

Health officials reported no new deaths from COVID-19.

Over the last two weeks, the state has seen not only an increase in confirmed cases, but also an increase in the percentage of tests that come back positive.

That’s a sign the virus is spreading, according to public health experts.

Most COVID 19 now strain G614—more transmissible

Fauci warns new coronavirus mutation may cause virus to spread more easily

BY JOHN BOWDEN - 07/02/20 10:42 PM EDT 1,333

Anthony Fauci, a key member of the White House's coronavirus task force, warned Thursday that a new strain of the coronavirus found to be dominant around the world may contain a mutation that allows it to spread from person-to-person with more ease.

In an interview with The Journal of the American Medical Association, Fauci referenced an article published in the peer-reviewed scientific journal Cell that pointed to a new, prevalent virus strain thought to have first spread in Italy.

He said it is possible this strain carries a higher viral load in the respiratory system, thereby making human transmission more likely.

“The data is showing there’s a single mutation that makes the virus be able to replicate better and maybe have high viral loads,” Fauci said.

"It just seems that the virus replicates better and may be more transmissible," he continued.

The study, which was released by researchers affiliated with the Sheffield COVID-19 Genomics Group, stated Thursday that the new strain "has become the most prevalent form in the global pandemic."

"The shift occurred even in local epidemics where the original [strain of the virus] D614 form was well established prior to the introduction of the G614 variant," the scientists wrote in their abstract, referring to the strain of coronavirus thought to have originated in Wuhan, China.

"The consistency of this pattern was highly statistically significant, suggesting that the G614 variant may have a fitness advantage," they continued.

Scientists with the study cautioned, however, that there was no evidence that the prevalent strain was more severe.

  • "In infected individuals G614 is associated with lower RT-PCR cycle thresholds, suggestive of higher upper respiratory tract viral loads, although not with increased disease severity," they wrote.

Fauci seemingly confirmed that statement, telling The Journal of the American Medical Association: "We don’t have a connection to whether an individual does worse with this or not."

The U.S. has seen more than 2.7 million confirmed cases of the coronavirus as of Thursday night, more than any other country in the world.
