…..GKEA leaders say their immediate concern is that the school day ends at the same time the assembly begins. Buses do not arrive until 3 p.m., meaning students who do not want to attend cannot leave the building before the event starts.

The union says the identities of the event’s speakers have not been released, mirroring other stops on the tour where Turning Point USA has not authorized local organizers to announce speaker names ahead of time. Previous events have featured U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon, and Erika Kirk — widow of TPUSA founder Charlie Kirk — is rumored to appear.

The union is asking the district to move the assembly time to 3:30 p.m. and provide earlier, clearer communication about future events.

“We are calling on the district to put these safeguards into place immediately,” Coates said.

Illinois Education Association President Karl Goeke echoed those concerns, saying safety should be the priority in all school activities.
