GREEN BAY - Shopko is scheduled to close its remaining stores later this year, with area stores in Janesville, Monroe and Fort Atkinson in Wisconsin and Belvidere and Freeport in Illinois slated to close by June 16.
Shopko was founded in Green Bay in 1962 and had 360 stores in 26 states in the Central, Western and Pacific Northwest, including Shopko Hometown, Shopko Pharmacy and Shopko Express locations.
"This is not the outcome that we had hoped for when we started our restructuring efforts," said Russ Steinhorst, Chief Executive Officer of Shopko. "We want to thank all of our teammates for their hard work and dedication during their time at Shopko."
The company filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Jan. 16. Prior to that, Shopko announced it would sell 42 of its pharmacy locations, including pharmacy locations in Beloit and Janesville.
In February, the company announced it would close the Beloit Shopko by May 12, eliminating 58 full and part-time jobs.
A news release from Shopko following its bankruptcy filing noted "excessive debt and ongoing competitive pressures" as reasons the company had filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
