BOONE COUNTY-On Tuesday evening March 15, storms with heavy rain and w...inds blew through Boone County. Other counties in the State of Illinois were under tornado warnings which made for a rather interesting election night as not only were individuals watching for results, but also keeping an eye on the local weather radar. Heavy voter turnout delayed precincts from reporting until nearly 8:30 p.m. in Boone County.

The 2016 Primary Election season has seen record turnouts across the country and Boone County was no exception yesterday. At 7:00 p.m. the doors were locked at the Boone County Administration building and if you were already in line to vote, you were permitted to submit your ballot. Between 50-60 people waited in line and the last to cast their votes were well after 8:00pm. A fair amount of those waiting to vote registered just prior to voting. At the end of the evening Boone County Clerk and Recorder Mary Steurer displayed a packet of new voter registration cards about 4 inches think. It was unprecedented.

According to the final Election Summary Report with 100% of precincts reporting Boone County has 31,979 registered voters in the county. Yesterday 14,668 ballots were cast or 45.87% voter turnout which is an outstanding percentage for a primary election.

All evening while individuals were registering to vote, registered voters casting ballots and with 38 districts reporting with ballot boxes to the Clerk’s Office, Mary Steurer, her staff along with several volunteers kept a professional and yet fast paced office. There were times they were literally running across the room, but they were able to successfully complete their duties.

It was a very late night for everyone in the office as the lights did not go off until after 12:30 a.m. and then requiring staff to be back in only a few hours later for a regular business day. Mary, her staff and volunteers deserve a big thank you for all their efforts from everyone in Boone County. Job well done!

If lasts night’s election results is any indication, the 2016 November Presidential Election should continue to set national and local numbers of voter turnout.
