The last day of production for Chrysler’s Belvidere assembly plant is Dec. 18, according to its production schedule, and the plant won’t be running again until the week of Jan. 11.
The company has about 2,600 workers at the plant on two shifts, but the second shift is temporary and officials have not indicated how long it will last. The plant traditionally is closed for a week in December for Christmas, but the continued slow auto sales in the recession has most auto companies looking to cut costs.
