BOONE COUNTY (WREX) — The Boone County Health Department is reporting two new coronavirus related deaths.
The health department says one of the residents was in their 20s and a resident in their 60s.
The two new deaths brings the total up to 6 in the county.
The county also reported two new cases of the virus, bringing the total up to 34 cases.
For the first time, the health department released specific numbers in relation to the Symphony Northwoods long-term care facility.
According to the health department, there's been 11 total cases at Symphony Northwoods long-term care facility, 6 cases being employees and 5 cases being residents. The facility has seen 2 deaths related to the virus, both of which were residents, according to the health department.

13 new coronavirus cases in Winnebago County, two new areas of concern

WINNEBAGO COUNTY (WREX) — The Winnebago County Health Department is reporting new coronavirus cases as well as areas of concerns within the county.
The health department is reporting 13 new cases, bringing the total number of cases in the county up to 222.
The county continues to report new cases in children, with one new case today. That marks 5 children under the age of 10 who have tested positive for COVID-19.

Here's a full breakdown of the cases by age group:

• 0-9: 5
• 10-19: 12
• 20-29: 36
• 30-39: 33
• 40-49: 38
• 50-59: 45
• 60-69: 30
• 70-79: 13
• 80+: 10

The county is also reporting two new areas of concern: Goldie B Floberg Center and Milestone, both of which help people with disabilities. Details on cases in both locations are not known at this time.
There were no new deaths reported on Tuesday, meaning the county remains at 11.

Winnebago County to begin testing all nursing home staff for COVID-19

ROCKFORD — The Winnebago County Health Department this week will begin coordinating the testing of all nursing home employees in the county.

Testing is part of a statewide strategy to slow the spread of the new coronavirus in long-term care facilities, Winnebago County Public Health Administrator Sandra Martell said.

Nursing home residents are among those most vulnerable to COVID-19, the potentially deadline respiratory disease caused by the new coronavirus.

“There are two plans going on right now,” Martell said Monday at a news conference. “One is that they want to look at places with no confirmed cases and do a baseline surveillance to see what is the circulation. And those of us who have cases, testing all of the staff.”

Martell said it is unclear how all employees will be tested, but the plan is to complete the testing as quickly as possible. She expects the staffs at nursing homes where public health officials have concerns to be tested this week.

But she said staff members are being monitored already.

“Every single one of those staff members is checked,” Martell said. “They are doing a symptom check, meaning they have to report symptoms and they are having a temperature check twice a shift in those facilities so that anyone who begins to exhibit any sign or symptom is quickly removed from the workplace.”

It was announced on Friday that a contract employee had tested positive for the disease at the Winnebago County-owned River Bluff Nursing Home at 4401 N. Main St.

Nursing homes are vulnerable during the pandemic because residents tend to live in close quarters and the majority of them are over age 70. Many are dealing with underlying health problems that can make symptoms more severe.

Martell on Monday announced that 15 more people had tested positive for COVID-19 countywide, bringing the total to 209. The number of dead from COVID-19 complications increased by two to a total of 11 dead in Winnebago County.

In Boone County, five residents at Symphony Northwoods, a Belvidere nursing home, have tested positive for the novel coronaivirus and two have died from COVID-19.

Six employees at the nursing home have tested positive for the virus, too, according to the Boone County Health Department.

In all, 34 individuals in Boone County have tested positive for COVID-19 and six have died from the disease, the health department said on Monday.

In Ogle County, 61individuals have tested positive for coronavirus and one resident has died from the disease.

BOONE COUNTY (WREX) — The Boone County Health Department is reporting two new coronavirus related deaths.
The health department says one of the residents was in their 20s and a resident in their 60s.
The two new deaths brings the total up to 6 in the county.
The county also reported two new cases of the virus, bringing the total up to 34 cases.
For the first time, the health department released specific numbers in relation to the Symphony Northwoods long-term care facility.
According to the health department, there's been 11 total cases at Symphony Northwoods long-term care facility, 6 cases being employees and 5 cases being residents. The facility has seen 2 deaths related to the virus, both of which were residents, according to the health department.

WINNEBAGO COUNTY (WREX) — The number of COVID-19 deaths in Winnebago County has reached double digits as the county reports two new deaths.
The county did not provide any additional information on the deaths, but says the total number of deaths in the county is up to 11.
The state is also reporting 14 new cases of the virus, bringing the total number of cases up to 209 in Winnebago County.
According to Dr. Sandra Martell, the director of the Winnebago County Health Department, 14% of all tests the county has sent out have come back positive.
Dr. Martell says the number of cases in the county is doubling every 8 days or so.

• Illinois' governor reportedly organized secret flights to haul millions of masks and gloves from China to bypass any Trump administration efforts to seize the products.

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker organized secret flights bringing millions of masks and gloves to the state from China on charter jets in an effort to bypass potential Trump administration efforts to seize the products, The Chicago Sun-Times reported.

Two invoices from the state revealed $888,275 purchases for "aircraft charter flight to Shanghai, China for COVID-19 response," according to the newspaper.

The state has reportedly spent $174 million on coronavirus-related purchases, such as ventilators, personal protective equipment, and hand sanitizer.

The Sun-Times cited a source familiar with the purchases, who said the details were kept secret "because we've heard reports of Trump trying to take PPE in China and when it gets to the United States."

Pritzker's press secretary declined to give the newspapers details on the flights, but noted the "challenges" Illinois has faced to obtain PPE for frontline health care workers.

Outbreak of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Yonkers Reuters

"The supply chain has been likened to the Wild West, and once you have purchased supplies, ensuring they get to the state is another herculean feat," press secretary Jordan Abudayyeh told the Sun-Times. "These flights are carrying millions of masks and gloves our workers need. They're scheduled to land in Illinois in the coming weeks and the state is working to ensure these much-needed supplies are protected and ready for distribution around the state."

A number of reports have documented federal efforts to seize ventilators, masks, and other PPE for the national stockpile, even intercepting and diverting orders without explanation.

Pritzker has vehemently criticized Trump for his handling of the coronavirus. In a CNN interview on April 14, Pritzker said he had "given up" on the Trump administration's promises to deliver medical supplies.

Trump has criticized Pritzker right back, saying he "is always complaining."

Prizker also described fierce bidding wars against the Trump administration, as well as other states, for PPE and other items from overseas. Last month, an Illinois official even sped up a highway with a $3.4 million check to personally meet a supplier's deadline to obtain 1.5 million N95 masks, the Sun-Times reported.
