Group asks Rockford Catholic Diocese to seek victims after child sex abuse suit filed - News - Rockford Register Star - Rockford, IL

ROCKFORD — A man who grew up in Aurora claims in a lawsuit filed in Winnebago County Court today that the Rev. John C. Holdren sexually assaulted him in 1972 and 1973.
The 49-year-old man, who lives in Maryland, is identified in court documents as John Doe JP, said his attorney Tim Frieberg of Rockford. The suit alleges that Holdren made unwanted sexual advances and fondled the victim when Holdren was at St. Rita's of Cascia parish in Aurora.
The suit against Holdren, St. Rita and the Diocese of Rockford, seeks damages of more than $50,000.
The suit says the church "knew or should have known of the dangers presented by Fr. Holdren but (failed) to adopt precautionary procedures" and "facilitated and enabled" the priest's crimes.
A news release from Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, also known as SNAP, said Holdren had not been publicly accused previously of abuse.
Penny Wiegert, director of communications for the Diocese of Rockford, said the Diocese had no comment and that it had not received any information on such a lawsuit. She confirmed that Holdren is not active in the church now and that he resigned in the mid-1990s.
An Aug. 17, 1994, Chicago Tribune story said Holdren resigned from St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Johnsburg three weeks after he was injured during a home invasion in Aurora. He told police then that a man demanded money and beat him unconscious when he said he had none. He was found by a friend the next morning and treated for head and facial injuries at Copley Memorial Hospital. His 1991 Olds Cutlass was taken and later recovered.
The SNAP group held a news conference this morning outside the Diocese's headquarters on Colman Center Drive urging anyone who "saw, suspected or suffered" the accused priest's crimes to call police. It also is calling on local Catholic officials to use parish bulletins, the church website and pulpit announcements to seek "victims, witnesses and whistle-blowers." Wiegert would not comment on whether the Diocese might consider the request.
In May 2014, the Vatican said it had defrocked 848 priests who raped or molested children and sanctioned an additional 2,572 with lesser penalties.

Priest Attacked In Home Resigns Duties

August 17, 1994

A McHenry County pastor has resigned from his duties, almost three weeks after he was injured during a home invasion in Aurora.

Father John Holdren resigned last week from the position of pastor at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Johnsburg "for reasons of his health," said Diocese of Rockford spokesman Owen Phelps.

Holdren, 49, told Aurora police on July 27 that he had been the victim of a home invasion in the 600 block of Lafayette Street in Aurora.

Holdren said he answered the front door on the night of July 26 and a man demanded money, then beat Holdren unconscious when he said he had no money. Holdren was found by a friend the next morning and taken to Copley Memorial Hospital, where he was treated for head and facial injuries.

Holdren's 1991 Olds Cutlass was taken that night and later recovered in the 100 block of South Lincoln Avenue, police said.

The incident was still under investigation Tuesday evening, Aurora police said.

Rev. Robert Balog was appointed parochial administrator for St. John's and has assumed pastoral duties, Phelps said. Holdren became pastor of the 1,500-family parish in 1983.

Pope's stance leaks; calls for urgent action on environment

    NICOLE WINFIELD
    Associated Press
    ‎June‎ ‎15‎, ‎2015
VATICAN CITY (AP) — A draft copy of Pope Francis' eagerly awaited encyclical on the environment calls for urgent action to protect the Earth and fight global warming, which the pope says is "mostly" due to human activity and the burning of fossil fuels.
The Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, said the document that was leaked to the Italian newsweekly L'Espresso and published on its website Monday was not the final version and that the official encyclical would still be released as scheduled on Thursday.
The L'Espresso draft, which was published in galley form in Italian, makes many of the same points that Francis and his advisers have been making in the months-long rollout of the document.
In the draft, Francis lays out both the scientific and the moral reasons for protecting God's creation, noting that the poor are already suffering the most from air pollution and toxic dumping and will continue to bear the brunt of rising sea levels and extreme weather conditions. The draft says population growth isn't to blame for ecological problems but rather the consumerist, wasteful behavior of the rich.
Francis backs up his comments with science showing the impact on the planet of the continual loss of biodiversity in Amazonian rainforests, the melting of Arctic glaciers, the overfishing of the seas and the pollution of the world's water supply.
Francis has said he wanted the encyclical to be read by everyone — not just Catholics — and he notes in the introduction that the document is now part of the formal teaching "magisterium" of the Catholic Church. That could be read as a warning of sorts to climate skeptics, including many Catholics in the U.S. who have suggested they simply will ignore the encyclical since the pope's views on the environment clash with their doubts about climate change.
Francis in September will travel to the United States and address both the United Nations and the U.S. Congress. Some Republicans are vocal climate skeptics and many conservatives have criticized the pope from even taking up the environment in an encyclical, the most authoritative teaching document a pope can issue.
Francis has said previously that climate change is "mostly" man-made and that humankind has a moral imperative to radically change its behavior to protect the planet for future generations — as well as to prevent the poor from suffering due to the sins of the rich.
In the draft, the pope repeats that scientific studies have shown that global warming is due "mostly" to human activity and the emission of gasses that prevents heat from dispersing in the atmosphere. He says that is worsened by a development model based on using fossil fuels as the main source of energy in the world.
The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, as well as many environmental groups, declined to comment on the content of the document, noting the Thursday embargo set by the Vatican for the official release.

St. James seeks a time extension on its special use permit

UPDATE: 8:00 PM, Monday, July 9—The Committee of the Whole voted not to send the extension on to City Council—barring any change in the “no” votes it appears the extension request is denied.

St. James’ cathedral style church maybe in jeopardy if an extension of the special use permit is not allowed.  To many the real question is will the Diocese of Rockford really ever build this huge church?

See item 2a. on the City Council’s agenda for Monday.  Note the meeting is Monday, July 9, 2012 at 6:00PM.

St. James’ “New Issue”: Father Diego Ospina?

The following letter was read aloud during the homily/sermon at all Masses this weekend.  The letter printed in English and Spanish was an insert in the weekly bulletin.

    Father Ospina

    Pray for St. James Parish.

The copy is not clear.  Here is the letter retyped.

    September 17, 2011

Dear Parishioners of St. James Church:

I write you of a sad and disturbing matter that has touched St. James Parish and its community and of which you may have already heard.

Last weekend, Father Diego Ospina made statements  from the pulpit against the Mata family and in particular against Karina Mata and Father Ospina’s statements have harmed this family, and caused division among parishioners.

What Father Ospina said against Karina and her family was false, and what Father Ospina said was wrong.   The pulpit is not a place to solve parish problems.  It is a part of the altar, a sacred place, a place to proclaim and teach the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The Diocese is extremely disheartened by the actions of Father Ospina.  This is not how our priests and our people should conduct themselves during Mass, or as a faith community.  We apologize on behalf of Father Ospina to the Mata family.  And we apologize that the parish became involved in what should have been a private issue resolved outside of the church.

People make errors in judgment.  We all know that perfection belongs to Christ alone.  Priests make mistakes.  What  happened last weekend was a mistake.  And now it is time to open your hearts and apologize if you have participated in any way in the dissemination of the untrue statements. And it is time to open your hearts and forgive, if you have been harmed by words that are un-Christian.  We would like the parish community to pray for harmony and unity among groups, following the will of Jesus that we remain as one.

These are difficult times we live in, and we ask for your prayers for Karina Mata and the Mata family, and we ask that you pray with us for unity and healing of your parish, and for your pastor, Father Geary, in his efforts to make people on in Christ; and for the peace and continued mutual understanding of each other.

    Yours in Christ,

    Rev. Diego Ospina, Parochial Vicar

Ordained to the priesthood May 21, 2005
Home Parish: St. Patrick, Rochelle, IL

My first call to the priesthood came when I was a small boy growing up in Ibague, Colombia. When I went to Mass with my Mother, I would think that in the future I would celebrate Mass like a priest. There were many things that influenced my decision to enter the seminary. My parents, my four brothers and sister were all supportive of my calling. I like to read about the missionaries in Africa and I admired Pope Paul II. I decided that God wanted me to bring Jesus' message to help people and heal souls.
I worked in fast-food restaurants for about four years. I liked all kinds of food, American, Chinese, Thai, Italian and, of course, Colombian. My favorite pastime activities are drawing, painting, reading and watching good movies.
While at the seminary, I found out that the United States needed Hispanic priests to serve the Hispanic population coming from Latin America. I decided to come to the Rockford Diocese in 2002.
My favorite devotion is to Our Lady of Fatima. I became devoted to her when I was a young boy and I pray to her always.
I hope to serve Our Lord by celebrating the Eucharist, giving the sacraments and teaching about Jesus. I want to work with the young people in the schools, visit homes and bring Christ to everybody.

Great Article Regarding Boone County’s Latino growth and future

The real question is how much do our leaders and community know about our Hispanic neighbors.  What countries do they come from?  If they are from Mexico, each Mexican state is often quite different as far as culture and aspirations. Has anyone even asked these questions?

Just like my Belgium grandparents they tend to settle in the same place with their brothers and sisters, cousins and neighbors from back home.  They are not always certain that this is the right place for them.  My father was born in Texas because my grandfather left the factory of Moline and tried to do what his brother did—become a vegetable farmer in Texas.  His brother stayed and family still lives there today. My grandfather’s great idea failed and was replaced with others, back in the Quad Cities.

I find my Spanish speaking neighbors warm, loving.   Many activities are family center with much music and celebration.  Many are seeking a rural life much like myself.  How can we learn to know each other better? Remember that their Spanish speaking forefather held claim to much of the United States before Ellis Island opened its gates.
