Letter: Ralph McKenna memorial fund will go to music camp - Rockford, IL - Rockford Register Star

It behooves me to share my past experience with others who are interested in this situation.

My husband, Ralph, taught and coached in Belvidere District 100 for many years. We took an active interest in our community and the school system and raised two children here.

Ralph passed away in 2011, and it seemed appropriate to have his memorial go to football players who were going to pursue a career in that area. It involved $4,000.

After the forms were completed two years in a row, I still hadn't heard anything regarding this. In April, I called the main office and was told they hadn't received the forms, that is was too late for this year and that I should fill out them again next year. I refused... two times and out!

For you kind people who generously donated to Ralph's memorial, you are owed an explanation. Ralph loved music, and he loved dance, which surprised some of his students. Therefore, the memorial money will be going to Birch Creek Music Camp in Egg Harbor, Wis. We always made a point of going up to enjoy the outstanding high school musicians during the big band and jazz sessions. There will be a bench with his name on it, and the balance will go to the camps other needs.

After living in Belvidere since the early 1960s and taking pride in our city and schools, I find it difficult to find words to explain my attitude now.

Ever since the idea to build another high school came up and was acted upon, it has affected the schools and the city. What a shame! There were other alternatives much less costly and less disruptive to the community. Now we're left with a big bill and the need to make drastic cuts, which affects everyone.

This story tells me you are losing good dedicated employees because they don't like what the future looks like or maybe they don't agree with what's going on.

From my perspective, I see an inept administration who we are paying to manage the district in an incompetent manner. Where are we going for here? These are the leaders of tomorrow that you're playing with. These decisions matter and make a big difference in children's lives.

Good luck to our students and the people who care.

Lois McKenna, Belvidere
